Henselt: Poème d’Amour

Price range: € 7,50 through € 17,50

Adolf von Henselt’s Poème d’Amour (1838) is his most lyrical and personal work, unfolding as a romantic étude built on soaring melodies and cascading arpeggios. Presented here in three versions, it reveals both the evolution of the piece and Henselt’s gift for expressive pianistic poetry.

Henselt: Poème d’Amour – Look Inside
SKU: FE003 Category:

Written in 1838 at the height of his early fame, Poème d’Amour is Henselt’s most lyrical and personal work. Once called Andante et Allegro concertante, it unfolds as a three-part étude in the guise of a romantic declaration. The piece opens with a broad cantabile melody over flowing arpeggios—an idiom that became Henselt’s hallmark—followed by a passionate middle section in which each melodic note is encased in sonorous chords. In the final section, the melody returns with featherlight, cascading arpeggios that shimmer across the keyboard, creating one of Henselt’s most breathtaking effects.

The work exists in three versions, all included in this edition. The first, published in 1838, was soon followed by a simplified alternative. Six months later, Henselt revised the piece entirely, producing a final version that synthesises earlier ideas. This Urtext edition presents all three, offering insight into Henselt’s evolving conception of the piece and allowing performers to choose the version that best suits their interpretation.

An Urtext edition presents the music as faithfully as possible to the composer’s intentions. It is based on all available primary sources—first editions, autograph manuscripts, and reliable contemporary copies—and reproduces the musical text without arbitrary additions or editorial rewriting. At Felix Editions, editorial intervention is limited to the correction of obvious errors and is documented in the critical notes, ensuring historical accuracy together with practical clarity for performers.

For lesser-known composers, surviving sources are often exceptionally rare—sometimes only a single print or manuscript. Preparing an Urtext under such conditions requires careful reconstruction and cross-verification of fragmentary evidence. Our editions therefore combine scholarly rigour with curatorial work, making otherwise inaccessible music available in its most authentic form.

Each publication is produced to high standards of clarity, durability, and aesthetic refinement. Scores are printed on archival-grade, acid-free paper, chosen for its pleasant texture, natural colour, and stability over time.

Depending on page count, albums appear in two formats:

– Saddle-stitched for shorter works;

– Black wire binding for larger volumes, allowing pages to turn easily and remain open on the stand.

Every title is beautifully typeset to enhance both appearance and usability. Proportion and spacing are carefully balanced for legibility; page turns are planned so that, wherever possible, they avoid technically demanding passages. The result is a publication that is as pleasing to the eye as it is to play or read.
