Description

Clara Schumann’s Valses Romantiques (August 1835) embody the carefree spirit of youthful love and optimism. After Robert Schumann’s engagement to Ernestine von Fricken was called off, Clara created this series of sparkling waltzes. The Valses Romantiques stand out for their playful nature, optimistic tone, and infectious virtuosity. Though the composition is demanding, it is attainable for the (committed) amateur, and ideal as an encore or opening piece for professionals.

Robert Schumann incorporated the theme of the first waltz from the collection as Valse Allemande in his Carnaval, Opus 9, where Clara is also represented as Chiarina and likely in Reconnaissance, showcasing their interconnectedness.

Our contemporary Urtext edition is distinguished by precise notation, meticulously calculated page turns, and an aesthetically appealing layout.

About the Composer

Even in the 19th century, a period brimming with some of the greatest pianists to ever grace the stage, Clara Schumann stands uniquely tall as perhaps the foremost among them. Often merely cast as the muse of her husband, Robert Schumann, she delivered unparalleled achievements, not just as a trailblazing pianist but also as a composer. From the moment she published her Opus 2 at the very early age of 12, she began to leave behind a compositional legacy. These works, while early, are by no means immature: they are the creations of a fully-fledged composer, marked by a remarkable emotional richness and playful virtuosity.
